A few nights ago, I had the pleasure of seeing The All-Girl Boys Choir at a tiny venue in Upland, CA. I’ll start by saying that I love live music. I love the way the bass throbs on the insides of my very being and the drums beat like a kind of second heart. Live music is my drug.
The “Mosh Pits Prohibited” sign made me sad but then I remembered that the AGBC are not mosh pit music, so I relaxed.
MARLENE HAMMERLE plays lead and slide guitar, harmonica and sings backing vocals. The myspace also credits her with Noise, but I’m not sure what that includes.
ALICIA WARRINGTON plays drums, guitar, bass, banjo and sings lead vocals. She’s also credited with noise.
Because the two women take on so many instruments, the All-Girl Boys Choir have a very thick sound. Their sound is at times a chaotic emotional mess, filled with tension and spontaneity. There are other times, when the music is clear and precise, where structure and rhythm and melody control that tension and emotion, shape it into something wonderful.
Bluesy, noisy rock and roll, is the best way to describe the six song ep Walking Miracles. When I first heard their single I thought that this music would be perfect in a garage, while I’m working on an old beat up car. The music would be playing on a three inch speaker on an old radio. If I had that scene in a movie, I’d so use their music.
Their live show was fun. The two women have a clear chemistry and are both clearly professional when it comes to live music. The vibe of the show was probably less than thrilling for them as there weren’t too many people, but they interacted and got the crowd moving just the same as they would have tried if the place was packed.
I blame the location of the club on the low turn out, not the bands music. It was their first show as a band and I don’t know how much they promoted it but the music was fun and alive and I can’t see how anybody would pass on seeing them if the opportunity came up.
If you’re going to be around any of the tour dates, you should go, it’ll be worth it.
